Greg and I were out at the family ranch today to do some fence repair. One of the mama cows (which is named Freckles, because - you know) was bellering for her baby and then started running to where she was. We didn't pay any attention because that is what mamas do. Well, a little while later we saw where she was standing and Greg saw buzzards so we headed that way. Sadly, when we got there, we discovered a dead calf and the buzzards had picked it pretty clean in the back end. Freckles just stood over her baby and when we left, she followed. After repairing the fence and then riding around the property (I would say about an hour or so went by), we were on a hill just looking at all the cows/bulls/calves and then noticed Freckles going BACK to where her baby was. There is no telling how many times she did this before or will continue doing this. Yes, that is the life of a rancher and we know this happens but it was so touching to see this mama yearning for her baby. Rest in peace little calf, your mama loves you!

On a happy note, I love cow babies and there are quite a few at the ranch. Got a picture of this cutie!
