Our European Anniversary Trip - From Austria and Switzerland

Our next destination was to be Germany, and we were going to do a self-guided tour of Neuschwenstein Castle, but because we had so much planned to do in Switzerland, we decided to cancel and spend extra time in Interlaken.

One thing to note when driving between countries in Europe - you need what they call a vignette for driving.  Following is the definition:

A vignette is a car sticker that drivers must fix to their windshield signifying that they have paid the appropriate taxes and fees necessary to drive along the highways of any given country, whether they are driving a rental car or own the vehicle.

The only ones we purchased were for Austria and Switzerland and we were able to find them at a gas station.  Germany did not require the sticker and the Czech Republic also requires them but our rent car already had the appropriate sticker on it.

We weren't sure when we left one country and drove in to another, there were no signs.  But one place we were pretty sure was a border patrol at one time.  It was an abandoned building with the arm post that went up and down.  It a leftover checkpoint from the Communist regime when traveling from then Czechoslovakia to Austria.

From Germany we drove through Liechtenstein and then in to Switzerland.  We are pretty sure when we were in Liechtenstein; I was looking at cities on Google Maps.  The scenery changed as well.  This is where the beauty began - the rolling hills with chalet like houses on them, beautiful green countryside and the leaves were changing.

I kept seeing this sign and thought wow, this must be a very large town as there are so many exits for it.  Well, this meant exit in German!

We were getting very close to our next destination of Interlaken and went through a lot of tunnels.

All of a sudden Google Maps quit working and we were on our own.  About that time, we both got texts from the cell phone provider that we bought the SIM cards from in Prague, but it was in Czech and we figured it was just about our service - which it was.  The saga continues.......
