The Worst Winter in my Lifetime in Texas

Never in my lifetime have we experienced two BIG snowfalls in our part of Texas.  The first came in January where we got almost 5" and then Valentine's weekend it snowed again and we got just about as much.  Temps dropped to 2 degrees one morning at our house, the lowest I can remember.  Electricity went out, water was unavailable in some areas.  Fortunately for us we never lost power for more than 5 seconds at a time (granted it did that at least 10 times one day) and we have a water well so we always had water.  Ice was a problem on roads which closed schools and businesses.  This crippled Texans.  I lived in weather like this when I was a young girl, my dad was military where he was stationed in Alaska, upper Michigan and Washington state.  But, that was a LONG time ago!  I do love cold weather but I was ready for "Snovid", "Snowmagedden" and "Snowpocalypse" to be over!

On Frozen Pond!

I REALLY felt sorry for our cows, we have/had three that were/are pregnant and I kept praying they wouldn't have their babies during the single digit temps.  Fortunately, the first one was born on Saturday February 13.

"Miracle"

On the 14th we went looking for her, found her, scared her and she ran off in to the woods and for two days we didn't see her again.  We looked for hours and just came to the conclusion that she died.  Mama was in a panic bellering for her and even going back to where she was born to find her.  On Tuesday the 16th I happened to be looking out the window and saw something in the corral and noticed it was a calf.  I geared up in my winter garb and went to check it out.  Long story short it was the "lost" calf!!!!  Neither my husband nor I could believe she survived the extreme cold weather without food from mama so I named her "Miracle".

The second calf was actually born on Valentine's day and if you notice, he actually has a Valentine on one side!

The dogs have been kept safe and warm by sleeping in the garage on pillows with the door closed and a propane heater going.  We have been burning our wood stove non stop for about a week now.  I LOVE our wood stove and always use it every winter.

Today, Friday February 19 is the first day temps have gotten above 32.  The ice and snow are melting, which in a way I am sad to see go.  It has been a winter wonderland here for about a week now and I have to say I have enjoyed it.

Our senior dog Remi enjoying the sunshine!

As much as I do like cold weather, I think I am ready for Spring!

The undecorating is almost done.  We are doing two shower remodels next week so I wanted to go ahead and get things put away.  The taking do...
